Oatmeal Papers – Rough surfaced, textured wall coverings, usually in tan or eggshell.


Ochre – A yellow iron oxide.


Oil Based Paint - Paints made with a drying oil, such as linseed, soya or tung oil, as the vehicle and binder, and mineral spirits or paint thinner as the thinning agent. They generally dry very hard, but take longer to dry than latex paints and require more time to re-coat.


Oil Color – Coloring (pigment or dye) dispersed in oil.


Oleo resinous – Film former containing oil and resin.


OSHA Occupational Safety & Health Act – Is the federal legislation and administration provided rules and enforcement for the safety of workers.


Opacity – The property of a paint allowing it to transmit no light and thus completely hide a surface.


Opaque Stain - Exterior stain that obscures the natural color and grain of wood, but still allows the texture to show through. Generally, one coat is applied to bare wood.


Orange Peel – A type of surface appearance resembling the skin of an orange.


Organic – Basically chemicals containing carbon and hydrogen, produced by plants and animals.


Organic Colors – Pigments of animal, vegetable, or organic chemical origin.


Orifice – Opening; hole.


Overlap – Portion (width) of fresh paint covered by next layer.


Overlapping Seam – Method of hanging in which only one selvage is trimmed.


Oxidation - A chemical reaction with oxygen. For example, the drying of oils in oil-based paint, or the rusting of iron or steel.


Oxide – A chemical compound formed when a material unites with oxygen.
