Galvanized - A ferrous metal that is covered with zinc to protect it from rusting. Glare – Light brightness greater than the human eye can adjust to. Glare causes discomfort, annoyance, and lowered visibility. Glass Prism – a piece of glass with a triangular cross section, used in color science to produce spectrum colors. Glazing – Setting glass. Glazing Compound - A caulk, sealant, or putty that is used to seal a glass pane into its frame. Gloss – The sheen or luster of a surface, ability to reflect light; based on degree of smoothness of a surface. Gloss Meter – An instrument for measuring gloss. Gloss Oil – An oil designed to increase the gloss of a paint. Gloss Retention – Ability to retain original gloss. Grain – Surface appearance, usually of wood. Grain Cracking - Cracking of a coating, parallel to the grain of the wood substance. Grain Raising - The swelling and standing up of short, broken fibers of wood caused by absorption of a liquid. Water is particularly inclined to cause this. Grass Cloth – Handmade paper, usually imported from Japan, made by gluing woven native grasses onto a handmade paper backing. Also, machine-made wall coverings that simulate grass cloth. Gray Blast Cleaning – Commercial blast. Grit – An abrasive obtained from slag and various other materials. Ground Coat – Coating of pigment applied to raw stock before the top or design colors are put on. Acts as background for a design. Guild – A union of workers in the same craft or trade. Gypsum - Natural crystalline calcium sulfate used as an extender pigment in paint, and in the manufacture of gypsum wallboard and plaster of Paris. Gypsum Board – See Drywall |
