Fading – Loss of color by deterioration or destruction of coloring matter by exposure to heat, light, or other agents.
Feathering - A process used to blend a small area into its surroundings after spot-priming, applying a filler, or scraping off an area of old paint.
Feather Edge – Tapered edge.
Federal Specifications – Government specifications for products, components and/or performance.
Ferrous – Iron Containing.
Ferrule – A ring around a tool to prevent splitting.
Fiber Cement Siding - Siding composed of cement, sand and cellulose fiber that has been cured under pressure to increase its strength and stability. The fiber is added to reinforce the concrete and prevent cracking.
Filler – A product used to fill the pores in wood prior to finishing.
Film – A layer of a coating applied to a surface.
Film Formation - The formation of a continuous dry film by a binder, either pigmented or not. In a latex paint this process is the result of the water evaporating and the subsequent fusion of the binder particles.
Film Thickness – Depth of applied coating, Expressed in mils (1/1000 in.).
Film Thickness Gauge – Device for measuring film thickness; both wet and dry gauges are available.
Fingering – A condition resulting from improper use and care of a brush.
Finish Coat – The final coat of paint to be applied in a paint system. The finish coat is the color of the object or surface when the painting job is completed.
Fire-Retardant Paint – A paint which will delay flaming of a flammable surface.

Fishtailing – A condition resulting from improper use and care of a brush.
Flagged – The split ends of a bristle to provide for holding, flow and release of coating.
Flaking – Disintegration of a coating in small pieces of flakes; see scaling.
Flammability – Measure of ease of catching fire; ability to burn.
Flame Cleaning – Method of surface preparation of a surface using flame.
Flash - Uneven gloss or color resulting from an unsealed substrate or excessively high or low temperatures during drying.
Flash Point – The lowest temperature at which a given flammable material can catch fire if a flame or spark is present.
Flat Paint - A paint with little or no sheen. Used mostly on interior walls and ceilings, and exterior wall areas.
Flatting – Loss of gloss in coating film.
Flatting Agent – The ingredient in lacquers or varnish that gives a rubbed finish or reduce gloss. Also available for paints.
Flatting Oil – A composition of heavy-bodied oil in a thinner, used to reduce paste paint to a flat paint.
Flat Wall Paint – paint that gives a finish without a gloss or luster.
Flexibility – Ability to be bent without damage.
Flock Papers – Wall coverings imitating the pile or surface of velvet or damask. Made by shaking fileyly chopped wool, silk, or synthetics over a pattern printed in varnish or some other sticky material.
Flow – A measure of self-leveling.
Fluid Adjusting Screw – A screw on a spray gun which controls the amount of fluid entering the gun.
Fluid Flow – A measure of flow through a gun with atomizing air shut off.
Fluid Nozzle – Fluid tip with orifice; in a broader sense it means needle and tip combination.
Fluid Tip – Orifice in a spray gun through which paint is discharged.
Fluting – Refers to parallel concave grooves carved on a surface for decoration. Grooves are sometimes spiral.
Foaming - Formation of bubbles (foaming) and resulting small, round concave depressions (cratering) when bubbles break in a paint film, during paint application and drying.
Foil – Very thin sheet of flexible metal on a paper or fabric back. Can be printed with transparent or opaque color and mottled to resemble marble, tortoise shell, and so forth.
Fret – Geometric band or border motif consisting of interlacing or interlocking lines. Also known a meander or key pattern.
Frieze – Generally, pictorial border running above door height or, in dining rooms, above plate rail.
Fungicide – A substance to retard or prevent fungus growth.
Frosting - Frosting appears as white, salt-like substance on the paint surface. Although frosting can appear on any color, it is most visible on darker colors. When it occurs on masonry it is sometimes mistaken for efflorescence.
Fungicide - An ingredient used in some coatings and sealants to help keep mildew and other fungi from growing on the surface.
